Dr. Michael R. Burgdorf believes in treating the whole patient, not just the disease. He understands that surgical procedures and medical language can sometimes be confusing and intimidating. He believes in educating the patient and explaining details about a procedure in a way in which a patient can understand. He is also aware that undergoing surgery is a big step in one’s life. He knows it may be difficult to place the needed trust in someone to change an appearance, restore function, or correct a deformity. Dr. Burgdorf feels humbled when a patient places their trust in him to surgically help correct their problem area. He never wants a patient to feel rushed into the decision of surgery, but wants them to fully understand the endeavor they are proposing to undertake. He feels that the decision to have surgery must be a team effort. Dr. Burgdorf views surgery as entering into a “partnership” with the patient. He prides himself on being available to his patients, no matter the time or place. His understanding and caring nature and gentle bedside manner have left many patients feeling comfortable, relaxed, assured and confident they chose him as their plastic surgeon.
Dr. Michael R. Burgdorf grew up in Sparta, New Jersey. He attended the University of Notre Dame, earning his B.S. degree. He received his M.D. degree from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans while concurrently earning his Masters in Public Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He began his general surgery residency at Tulane in New Orleans, training at the infamous Charity hospital. His training was interrupted by Hurricane Katrina and he finished his General Surgery at University of Mississippi in Jackson, MS. Dr. Burgdorf completed his Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training at University of Mississippi in Jackson, MS.
Having played linebacker on Notre Dame’s football team, Dr. Burgdorf is actively involved in maintaining his health with daily workouts. He is an avid college football fan and enjoys watching games with his three sons. He enjoys fine wines, good food, and the cosmopolitan nature of the Nashville area. Traveling with his wife, Casey, is one of Dr. Burgdorf’s favorite pastimes. Dr. Burgdorf is ever on the lookout for a new experience or adventure he can share with his family. Most nights, however, wrestling with his boys and his 100lb yellow lab is adventure enough.
Dr. Burgdorf is proud of his accomplishments of becoming a successful plastic surgeon and of treating his patients with dignity and respect. But his favorite accomplishments center around his marriage to his wife, Casey, and the births of their three sons. Being married for eight years and being a father are the best endeavors he has achieved in his life. His family is the cornerstone of who Dr. Burgdorf is as a person. His children constantly challenge him in ways he never dreamed possible, while his wife helps keep him grounded with her unfailing support.
