Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand

We need our hands!  From the most basic and humble purposes, such as feeding and dressing ourselves to the most amazing feats, like playing the piano or threading a needle, our hands are one of the most basic ways we interact with the world around us.

Whether from birth defect, injury, or disease, any loss of pain-free use and mobility can make life far less enjoyable than it should be.

The intricate and amazing structures of our hands require special expertise to evaluate, repair, and fully understand.

Physicians from Orthopedic and Plastic Surgery are trained in hand surgery, but only a small portion expand that foundation by undergoing fellowship training in this important area.  After rigorous testing and demonstrating competence in hand surgery, those surgeons can be awarded a "Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand".

Dr. David Martin, a board-certified plastic surgeon, has accomplished that level of expertise.

In 1998, Dr. Martin and his colleage Dr. Dale Collins published a "Manual of Acute Hand Injuries", a reference textbook for surgeons learning the details of hand surgery.  It has been used for physician teaching at numerous sites around the globe and has been praised for its concise and helpful format.

Dr. Martin has also published articles in the Journal of Hand Surgery and the Tennessee Medical Association Journal on important topics like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Workers Compensation is a TN State system of laws intended to assure that working people who sustain injuries or illnesses while at work receive the necessary care and are compensated for their missed work time and for any permanant problems after they heal.

Dr. Martin and his staff understand the difficult nature of Workers' Compensation injuries.  Employees want the best possible care for their upper extremity problems; employers want employees treated efficiently and helped to return to work as quickly as possible.  We know that sometimes those goals conflict with each other, but we are committed to excellent and efficient care of upper extremity problems, promp and clear communication to company representatives, and an honest assessment of an employee's status.
